ECPage V3.13 incorporates these changes not fully explained in the manual. The manual will be updated to reflect these later. NEW IN VERSION 3.13 ** The Delete Page and Copy page have been speeded up a bit. ** If you want to print a box (not a 'Shadow Box') without any border line at all, select a line width of 99 (ninty-nine) points. If you want to print a 'Gray Bar' type paper this option may be useful. You may still select any fill (None or W/F will, of course, not show up). This option does not apply to the shaded 'Shadow Box'. ** Now better support for international characters above <126> ** Printing with characters above <126> will vary upon which symbol set you are using. Not all characters will be present in all fonts. For US the PC-8 set is best, for other countries, select the ISO set that most closely represents your country code and code page you have set up. With right justification on characters above <126>, the CGTimes font set may give slightly better alignment, although any can be used. Characters below <127> are fine with any of the supported fonts. ** You can now select which symbol set you want to use when you create a scalable font ID. The place to record the desired choice is on the screen where you select desired layout units (press [F4] on the layout elements screen). You can also EDIT the font string in 'Font Maint'. The symbol set you select should be available in your target printer. ** You can edit or add a font in 'Font Maintenance'. if you add a font please be aware that it should ONLY be used for 'LEFT' justification, as there is no font width data availablle in ECPage for user provided soft fonts. It does not require a point size or other data if it is identified as (#X where # is the download ID number, and you DL in that order. Note also, any reprinting of a print file must be done with the soft font first downloaded to the laser printer. A font ID# specified as Download #1 MUST BE downloaded as font ID #1, #2 DL as #2, ect. See the file included with ECPage called SOFTFONT.TXT for downloading steps if you don't know how. This option is provided for users who have a converted PCX file in a soft font format (ie, thru a utility such as TAX WARE'S PCX2FNT shareware product available on Compuserve in HPPER forum Lib) and want to use it. This works fairly well for some images, just convert the B/W PCX file to a soft font with PCX2PCL, giving it a character such as 'A'. Then in ECPage use it as one of the D/L font ID's. (3 are already set up in the LJ3/4 default font file - you can add more - just use the desired number.) In the text field, just use the letter 'A' (or whatever character you assigned to the PCX font.) with that font ID. When the page is printed the letter will be replaced by the PCX image. Of course you must have first D/L'ed the font to the printer. Other programs may also be used to convert the PCX file to a soft font and some services do scans - placing the result into a soft font format. A Later version of ECPage is planned incorporating a merge of a PCX file with a ECPage print file. MEMORY ISSUES ECPage needs at least 512K FREE RAM or more to run properly - especially when loading a printer driver or printing. This has been modified somewhat in V3.13. V3.13 uses about 20 to 25K less memory thru the use of a Overlay file. Also, if available RAM memory (as shown on the front menu screen in the lower right corner) is less than 70KB, some files will be swapped to disk while printing and driver loading. This adds a second or so to the operation's time but does permit it to complete even in very low memory conditions. If you have extended memory available, but are low on convention memory you could create a 1 MB ramdisk and that could be used as the swap disk - much faster than swaping to a fixed disk. To do this add the SET command to EPAGE.BAT just ahead of the line that calls ECP.EXE. The command is: SET CLATMP=D:\ D:\ is the ram disk, substitute whatever drive letter is correct in your installation. EPAGE.BAT has this command, and it's reset command, already entered but REM'ed out. To use it, put in correct ram disk drive letter and remove the rems. Don't use a RAM DISK less than 720KB. No spaces around the '=' sign. USER MODIFIED INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT (Included with Registration Disk) Users can modify how ECPage sorts and translates positions of UPPER/LOWER case characters. The Month names and error messages can also be edited as desired. Hopefully, you will never see any of the error messages. This utility is provided as a service to international users - it is not needed to run ECPage. Have Fun With ECPage!
